Hunan, Guizhou Visitors Experience Miao People’s New Year Celebrations

More than 30 households from Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Hunan Province and Tongren City of Guizhou Province gathered at the Laojiazhai Village of Shanjiang Town of Fenghuang County, to experience how the Miao people celebrate their new year. Various activities such as spinning top, walking on stilts, doing Miao embroidery, weaving belt, preparing pork for the new year, and having long street banquet, not only roused childhood memory of the adults but also attracted children’s great attention.

The event aimed to promote and inherit the intangible cultural heritage of Xiangxi, and manifest the charm of traditional folk customs of the Miao people. Guests were invited after applying online successfully, to participate in traditional local celebrations, including making ciba (a kind of cake made of glutinous rice), brewing wine, and grinding toufu, to welcome the upcoming new year of the Miao ethnic group.

“Lanmen wine”, a greeting custom for local people to welcome distinguished guests, gets prepared for guests.

Guests enjoy the long street banquet, where hundreds of tables are gathered in a long line.

Bonefire is held merrily.
