New North Railway Station of Changsha Put into Operation

After three years’ construction, Hunan’s largest freight station–the New North Railway Station of Changsha was put into operation on January 8, 2012. It will play an increasingly important role in propelling the economic and social development of the city and the province.

Chen Run’er, secretary of the CPC Changsha Municipal Committee, declared the opening of the station. Changsha Mayor Zhang Jianfei presided over the ceremony.

The new station, with a total investment of nearly four billion yuan, is an important part of the relocation and construction of Changsha North and South Railway Stations. The transport volume of Xianing Station’s freight yard is planned as 20 million tons in the future, and in the short term is to reach five million tons. The annual cargo handling capacity will be three times larger than that of the old one.

“The opening of the station marks a success of the relocation and construction project via the cooperation between the railway departments and the local areas”, said Li Wenxin, president of Guangzhou Railway Group. Li remarked that Guangzhou Railway Group will go all out to promote the sound and rapid development of Hunan’s economy and society.
